Tom is author of Escape from Myself: A Manic-Depressive’s Journey to Nowhere. Mental illness swept through his family like a Kansas tornado leaving three dead, two by suicide and one as a result of self-medicating with alcohol. He and his sister ignored the fear of stigma unlike their father, brother and sister who let it keep them from getting psychiatric treatment and choosing death instead. Since his diagnosis with bipolar disorder in 1993, Tom has devoted his life’s work to fighting mental illness stigma which keeps people suffering when they could be easily treated, although not cured. He was diagnosed in 2015 with multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system and left him partially blind. Despite a physical handicap he moves forward on his passionate mission of removing stigma as a barrier to mental health for everyone.

Tom taught public speaking at the university level for many years and has done executive coaching. One of his clients, an author and sports psychologist, said, “Tom took me from bumbling to brilliant as a keynote speaker.” In addition to private coaching, Tom also does public speaking seminars for managers.
