Have you heard the news? What news? Well, rumor has it that ——— so starts the gossip. Gossiping as described by researchers is not mainstream empirical concept or positive means of communication in the work place, home and social surrounding. In some culture, gossiping is termed as “mind poison” that starts unquenchable fire. Rabbi Mendel Kessin described gossiping as poison, unhealthy food for the mind that cannot be purchase from any store, does not come in any package, not physical but merely environmental, but deadly when employed as means of communication.
Gossiping is regarded as trivial talk, a need to chatter and discover who is a friend or foe. Gossiping is known to pull people together or spilt them apart. Barrett (?) inferred that negative gossip definitely alters the way we relate to those who are been gossip about negatively as human brain is wired to respond to gossips. For instance, Barrett research showed that gossip affect the way we feel about others, including perfect strangers after the discharge of second hand information. Second hand information whether negative or positive has powerful effect on relationships between two perfect strangers or great friends. Thus Barrett concluded that gossip not only influence or cost an individual a great name but their way of life, well- being as individual opinions and personal feelings are actually influenced by negative gossips. CEOs, chairpersons and high management personals must be careful in using false gossips or malicious rumors/misinformation as control mechanism within their organization or others or in any given situation as it may come back to bite.
Negative gossip influences the mind, human consciousness and the subconscious dangerously. The human mind is said to assist individuals determines their habits, attitudes, personality, understanding, love, like and dislikes. What we learn and how we learn them is influence by our way of lives and what we listen to is essentially part of our way of life. The type of food we feed our minds by way of what we hear especially negative gossips poisons our heart in a subtle way. Negative gossip does not affect our physical body visibly and in most cases an individual been poison has no idea that they are been poisoned. Experiences have shown that negative and unpleasant behaviors or thoughts deposited by use of gossip affect the mind in the same manner that poisonous food destroys the physical body. Therefore CEOs and other upper level managers should be conscious of gossiping as it is a dangerous tool to manipulate. Gossiping is cabbage for the mind that makes victims of us all as strange minded individuals use unscrupulous means in taking undue advantage of others while smearing their good name.
Therefore, it is absolutely important that CEOs and upper management individuals be mindful of the use of gossip as the human mind is a manufacturer of countless thoughts daily and gossip eats away the healthy mind and destroys positive productivity in the process. Thus it becomes imperative that CEOs and other upper management personals surround themselves with positive optimistic individuals for a healthy stress free life. Negative gossip can be depressive and the one on the receiving end may never successfully clear their names as gossiping can be compare to throwing several feathers from the 30th floor of a building. The wind carries the feathers everywhere before it gets to the surface of the earth, not all the feathers can be recovered. Hence it is depressive to use gossiping as a manipulative weapon. Those who gossip with you gossip about you so it is said. But not all gossips are dangerous and damaging in all spheres of human endeavor. Psychological researches today are showing that not all gossip are damaging. However, in upper management level, CEOs and Chairpersons should be careful what form of gossip they engage in as negative gossiping are like two edge sword that cuts very deep. Given that if a CEO or chairperson feels threaten, they may throw dirt on some individuals and others whom may seem difficult and uncooperative by using negative gossip. It must be noted that negative gossip may also reflect negatively on the user. For instance, researches are now showing that as a person gossips about another, the people listening assign the negative attributes ascribed to those been gossip about to the one doing the gossiping.
Therefore CEOs, Chairpersons and higher management level personals must be conscious of their use of gossip while throwing dirt as whatever they say also is reflective negatively on them in the same light they speak about others. Stadler (2003) and Smith et al (1999) indicated that gossip and rumor in any form definitely is undeniably aversive and problematic in all of human endeavor. These researchers concluded that while there is great distinction between gossiping and rumor, they are both inseparable as they go hand in hand as weapons of character assassinations. Unfounded rumors are equal just as bad as unfounded gossips as they are both depressive.Some researchers describe gossip as inner-curliness pass between people who have common history, shared interest or believe they are been threaten. Gossiping is intended as idle talks or small talk that are inconsequential and without purpose (Gluckman, 1963). Hence CEOs and industry movers imperatively need to be self-conscious of gossips as means of information gathering or method of communication within ranks, between ranks and as means of communication within an industry.
