Recently I attended a Long Range Planning meeting. There were nine members on the committee. There was one non-member of the committee at the meeting. The average age of the ten of us was at least 72. One female. The rest a bunch of old white guys. Meeting to discuss Long Range Planning for the city.

Scary thought isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong. The ten of us had a couple hundred years of going to city government meeting experience. A lot of history could be remembered. But really, the ten of us discussing what the city should look like 20 years from now? Shouldn’t be happening.

New blood and futuristic thoughts are needed everywhere. There was actually two of the ten that didn’t have an email address. Discussing Long Range Planning. Hello?

Where is the next generation of civic leaders going to come from, and when are they going to step forward? Us old white guys need a little competition on the ballot. Two thirds of us keep getting re-elected without competition. Did you hear that? Two thirds of us run un-opposed. Each and every election.

We’ll go peacefully if defeated. It would be nice if more of us were shown the door. We shouldn’t be discussing long range planning. That is all there is to it.

Come on. Your city needs you.

It’s time to step forward.
