Jim Rohn, motivational leader and a man who took himself from rags to riches said, “Learn how to separate the majors from the minors. Most people don’t do well because they major in the minor things.”
How do you spend your time? Do you know the 80/20 rule which states that 80 percent of your results come from 20 percent of your efforts? The CEO’s of companies know this. They understand that 20% of their customers give them 80% of their sales. They focus their efforts on advertising to the 20% who purchase, not the other 80% who are not interested in their product.
Where do you spend your day? Do you hone your time into doing the things that produce 80% of your outcomes or do you do busy work? There are people who can stay busy all day and not achieve the things which create a difference. The myth is that working hard gets you ahead of the pack. This is not true. You can work hard at doing a task which does not produce desired results.
In order to get ahead and to create your dream life, you have to do the right actions at the right time.
For the past 10 years I’ve been steadily gaining weight. What did I do? I took the steps most books on dieting tell you to take:
- Exercised at least 40 minutes a day.
- Gave up sugar and gluten.
- Ate vegetables, low-glycemic fruits, and lean protein.
- Slept at least 8 hours per night.
- Reduced my alcohol and caffeine intake.
What happened? I kept gaining weight. I worked hard. I changed my habits. But was I working right? No, because the results were not positive. I could have kept doing what I was doing, and I would have kept getting what I was getting. Did I get frustrated? Absolutely. I’m not immune to negative feelings especially since I felt like I was working hard at doing the right things.
When I stopped to ask myself if I was getting the results I wanted from my actions, I realized I needed to change my tactics. I needed to ask different questions. By asking the right questions, I discovered I had an underactive thyroid which affects weight gain. By taking supplements and addressing my thyroid issues, the weight slipped off me.
If you are not getting the results you want, you might want to ask yourself if you are majoring in the minor things. Are you doing the actions which create the desired outcomes? The only person who cares deeply enough about you to affect your daily outcomes is you. If you want different results, focus on doing the right actions.
